Freedom Plaza
In March of 2022, the City of Twentynine Palms officially unveiled and opened Freedom Plaza, a dynamic 10-acre downtown revitalization project along Twentynine Palms Highway that brings a new vitality to the city's downtown and creates a new heart of the community.
This multi-faceted downtown revitalization project, formerly known as Project Phoenix, was designed with flexibility in mind in order to create new opportunities for the city to host a wide variety of special events. In addition to meeting the community’s recreational, educational, and professional needs, Freedom Plaza also supports the booming growth in tourism driven by visitation to California’s iconic Joshua Tree National Park. The new Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center is a collaborative partnership between the National Park Service, the City of Twentynine Palms, Joshua Tree's traditionally associated Native American communities, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Joshua Tree National Park Association (JTNPA), and is a must-see destination for park visitors!
Freedom Plaza features:
Multi-Purpose Community Center
The new 11,000 square-foot Community Center serves as a recreational hub and flexible athletics facility and can also be used for a variety of types of special events.
Outdoor Stage & Event Space
Centered between the Community Center and Joshua Tree Visitor Center is a large outdoor stage and event space, creating a great new community space for music festivals, art shows, the weekly farmers market, and other types of special events.
Culinary Arts Kitchen
Working in partnership with the Morongo Unified School District and Copper Mountain College, the City of Twentynine is thrilled to incorporate a culinary arts kitchen into Freedom Plaza, creating a teaching space to inspire and train the next generation of culinary arts students.
Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center
Open daily from 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. the new Visitor Center should be everyone’s first stop when visiting Joshua Tree National Park. Operated by the Joshua Tree National Park Association, this beautiful new center is a place to get park information, become a junior ranger, shop the bookstore, and explore incredible exhibits. The current, award-winning exhibit, titled "Universal Threads" offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the intertwining relationships between plants, animals, earth, sky, and human life. By following colored lines, visitors can uncover new stories about the park's Native American communities and reflect on the impact of scientific discoveries on their cultures with this interactive exhibit. Joshua Tree National Park acknowledges these original stewards, and this exhibit will pay respect to the people, past, present, and emerging who have been in this area for generations.
