Spring is one of the most breathtaking, and busiest times to explore Joshua Tree National Park. Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning for another adventure, here are essential tips to help you navigate the season, beat the crowds, and explore responsibly!
Buy Your Park Pass Online
- Skip the line and get your park pass ahead of time on recreation.gov. Having your pass ready not only saves you time but also ensures smooth entry.
Download the National Park Service App
- The official National Park Service App is a must-have! Access trail maps, ranger programs, campground details, and even offline maps—a lifesaver in areas with no cell service.
Arrive Early or Visit on Weekdays
The park sees its highest visitation in spring. For a quieter, more enjoyable experience:
- Plan to arrive before 8:00 AM.
- Visit on weekdays if possible to avoid weekend crowds.
- Avoid exiting immediately after sunset to skip long lines.
Use the North Entrance in Twentynine Palms
- For the fastest entry and exit, head to the North Entrance in Twentynine Palms.
- Not only is it less congested, but it also puts you close to local restaurants, shops, and lodging options—making it the perfect gateway to your adventure.
⚠️ Temporary West Entrance Closure: April 7–10, 2025
If you’re planning a visit between April 7–10, 2025, please note that the west entrance to Joshua Tree National Park will be closed to all traffic for roadwork related to the construction of a new, expanded entrance station. During this time, all visitors must use the north entrance in Twentynine Palms or the Cottonwood entrance at the south end of the park. Learn more about the closure and entrance station project on the National Park Service website.
Visit the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center in Twentynine Palms
- Before heading into the park, stop by the newest of the park’s three visitor centers, located in downtown Twentynine Palms at 6533 Freedom Way, right near the North Entrance.
- Open daily from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, this visitor center offers helpful park information, a traditional national park gift shop, and features the award-winning Universal Threads exhibit.
- This powerful exhibit highlights the voices of the park’s 15 traditionally associated Native American communities and explores the deep connection between people, plants, and wildlife in the Mojave Desert—a must-see for all park visitors.
Follow Leave No Trace Principles
Protecting the fragile desert environment is everyone’s responsibility!
Follow these important guidelines:
- Leave only footprints, take only photos. Never remove rocks, plants, or cultural artifacts.
- Give wildlife space. Don’t feed animals and secure your food and trash.
- Pack out all trash and food scraps. Keep the park clean and safe for others.
- Pets are not allowed on trails. This keeps your pet, native wildlife, and the ecosystem safe.
- Respect speed limits. Drive slowly to protect wildlife, especially the federally threatened desert tortoise.
- Be considerate of others. Share the trail, keep noise levels down, and remember drones are prohibited.
Be Prepared & Stay Safe
Your safety is your responsibility!
Make sure to:
- Know what kind of adventure you’re getting into.
- Carry plenty of water.
- Park only in designated parking spots or graded shoulders along the road.
