The Perseids: One of the Year's Best Meteor Showers
The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most prolific and widely anticipated meteor showers of the year, and is active this summer from July 17 through August 24. During its peak, patient observers under dark skies can often see 50 to 100 meteors per hour, making it one of the best opportunities of the year to experience nature's own celestial light show.
The Perseids occur as Earth passes through the dusty debris trail left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. As tiny fragments of comet dust enter Earth's atmosphere at tremendous speeds, they burn up, creating the brilliant streaks of light we see across the night sky. The shower is named after the constellation Perseus, the point from which the meteors appear to radiate.
The Perseids are also famous for producing bright fireballs, larger meteors that often leave glowing trails lingering in the sky for several seconds after they pass. The Perseids are expected to peak on the night of August 12, continuing into the early morning hours of August 13, coinciding with the dark skies of the new moon.
