DISCOVER THE ART MURALS OF 29 PALMS w/ Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park
Known as “The Oasis of Murals,” this outdoor art gallery features large-scale scenes of homesteader history and local characters.

As a gateway to Joshua Tree National Park, Twentynine Palms boasts wide-open vistas, the world’s largest U.S. Marine Base, and a burgeoning local art scene resulting in 20+ murals and sculptures detailing the unique history of the city as well as the landscape and wildlife of the Mojave Desert. Kick-starting a renaissance of this city in 1994, the Mural Project, sponsored by Action Council for 29 Palms, created twenty-five beautiful historical artworks on the commercial buildings downtown–encouraging an art scene, visitor-friendly businesses, and a rebirth of community spirit. Join local guide and mural enthusiast Heather Clisby in exploring the murals’ history along with guest muralists in this day-long class. LeeAnn Clarke, chair of Action Council for 29 Palms, the organization that created and maintains the mural project in 29 Palms, will participate in the class as an advisor.

About the Instructor: Living in the modest Twentynine Palms home built by her grandfather in 1960, Heather Clisby has been a lifelong fan of the desert – the wildlife, the plant life, and the resulting art it inspires. A news reporter and on-air personality for Z107.7FM Community Radio in Joshua Tree, Heather is also a wilderness guide for Wandering Mojave Hiking Services, leading hikes in Joshua Tree National Park, her favorite place on Earth. Since the 1990s, Heather has led her famous ‘mural tours’ in Twentynine Palms, proudly showing off local history and the creative talents that made these pivotal stories come to life. She remains perplexed about why all towns do not replicate this colorful and educational tradition.
