29 Palms, CA on Polaroid | Photo Pop-Up at Desert General
DESERT GENERAL presents “29 PALMS, CA ON POLAROID” by Stefanie Schneider, a German photographer and filmmaker known for shooting fine-art photographs exclusively on Polaroid film. This photography exhibit opened on February 24, and will remain on display through to May 25, 2023.
Schneider works with chemical mutations of expired Polaroid film stock. Chemical explosions of color spreading across the surfaces undermine the photograph’s commitment to reality and induce her characters into trance-like dream-scapes. Like flickering sequences of old road movies, Schneider’s images seem to evaporate before conclusions can be made – their ephemeral reality keep alive the confusions of dream, desire, fact, and fiction. Schneider, who lives in Morongo Valley, has been working the High Desert for a long time.
The 22 miscolored, and timeless images and portraits exhibited were all shots in Twentynine Palms. “I can’t believe it took more than 30 years to have my art exhibited in Twentynine Palms, the very city that inspired me so much and for such a long time, and were I shot a large part of my work.”, says Schneider.
The art exhibition offers a rare window into the work of the artist which has been shown at the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation, Berlin, the InstitutfÃ1⁄4r Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d’Arles, as well as at many art expos outside Germany (France, Brazil, the U.K., Czech Republic, Austria, and in several cities across America.)
