  • Sunset at Mojave Desert in Twentynine Palms, CA

When to Watch: Before dawn, early August to mid-August; Peaking on August 13
Nearest Moon Phase: Full Moon on August 11
Duration of Shower: July 14 through September 1
Expected Meteors at Peak: 90 meteors per hour

The Perseids are typically one of the best meteor-viewing experiences of the year. This year, your best shot at catching the Perseids will be a few hours before dawn when the Moon is closer to setting. The August Perseid meteor shower is rich and steady, from early August through the peak. The meteors are colorful, and they frequently leave persistent trains. All these factors make the Perseid shower perhaps the most beloved meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere.

When to Watch: Watch late July through early August, mid-evening to dawn; Peaking July 28-29
Nearest Moon Phase: New Moon on July 28
Duration of Shower: July 18 through August 21
Expected Meteors at Peak: 20 meteors per hour

The Delta Aquarids get their name from the constellation Aquarius, which they appear to emanate from. A truly dark sky offers the best chance of seeing the Delta Aquarids, as they tend not to be as bright as some other meteor showers. This year, expect no interference from the Moon at all, as it will be in its new phase and below the horizon during the peak viewing hours of the Delta Aquarids. Keep an eye out for them in the pre-dawn hours of July 28-29.

Like May’s Eta Aquarids, July’s Delta Aquarids favors the Southern Hemisphere. Skywatchers at high northern latitudes tend to discount it. But the shower can be excellent from latitudes like those in the southern U.S. Delta Aquarid meteors tend to be fainter than Perseid meteors. So a moon-free dark sky is essential. About 5% to 10% of the Delta Aquarid meteors leave persistent trains, glowing ionized gas trails that last a second or two after the meteor has passed.

NIGHT SKY FESTIVAL TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW! Purchase your tickets here.

The Night Sky Festival celebrates Joshua Tree National Park’s night sky with a 2-day event that includes activities for all ages.

In the morning, visit Sky’s The Limit Observatory for a guided tour of the Orrery, a scale model of the solar system that is large enough to walk around and through. While there, take a guided walk on a wilderness or hiking trail with docents explaining the unique environment’s plants, animals, and geology. Stop at the solar telescope for a close-up look at the sun. Youth can participate in astronomy-themed crafts. Don’t forget to try your luck at Panning for Gold with First Class Miners while you are there.

The afternoon features a variety of astronomy lectures by knowledgeable presenters. Attendees can stop at the night sky “selfie” photo booth and various information tables, including the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) and other supporting organizations. The event’s highlight is the Night Star Party, where spectacular views of our desert night sky are abundant through their 20 telescopes with astronomers. Listen as these experts explain what you are seeing. Enjoy live music, constellation tours, and storytelling throughout the evening.

Proceeds from this event support nonprofit organizations that provide educational programs.
