Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park Headquarters and Oasis Visitor Center are located in Twentynine Palms, accessed from either Utah Trail or National Park Drive off 29 Palms Highway in downtown Twentynine Palms. Just a few short miles south on Utah Trail will take you uphill to the east entrance gate for the 800,000-acre national park.

 

Historic Pioneertown

Pioneertown was built in 1946 as a movie set for westerns (Gene Autry, Cisco Kid, Annie Oakley, Judge Roy Bean, Range Rider, and Buffalo Bill Jr.).  Original investors in the town included Roy Rogers, who also built the Pioneertown Bowl, Sons of the Pioneers (after whom the town was named), movie villain Dick Curtis, actor Bud Abbott, Russell Hayden, who played Lucky in Hopalong Cassidy, Hollywood gossip columnist Louella Parsons, and Philip N. Krasne, the man who saved Pioneertown. Old West re-enactments occur every weekend April to October, Sat./Sun. 2:30 p.m. Located four miles north of Yucca Valley on Pioneertown Road.

 

Pappy and Harriet's Palace

The legendary Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace has been delighting locals and travelers since 1982, with its mesquite BBQ, country bar, live music, dancing, and rustic ambiance. Pappy's hosts live local and visiting bands Fridays through Sundays, plus seasonal music festivals, and you never know what famous traveling musician may show up on stage on any given night! Located on Mane Street in historic Pioneertown (built in 1946 as a movie set for Hollywood westerns), it is four miles north of Yucca Valley on Pioneertown Road.

 

Hi-Desert Nature Museum

The Town of Yucca Valley's Hi-Desert Nature Museum was founded in 1964 and offers art exhibits, cultural and natural heritage displays, educational programs and events. The museum is a family-oriented facility designed to display and educate residents and visitors about the desert environment. Admission free. Open Tues.-Sun. 10-5.

 

The Integratron, Landers

George Van Tassel, creator of the Integratron, was a legendary figure, an aeronautical engineer and test pilot who worked for Lockheed, Douglas Aircraft and alongside Howard Hughes at Hughes Aviation . He was also one of the leaders in the UFO movement who held annual "Spacecraft Conventions" at Giant Rock for 25 years. Van Tassel said UFO channelings and ideas from scientists such as Nikola Tesla led to the unique architecture of the Integratron. He spent 18 years constructing the building.

 

Gubler's Orchids & Orchid Festival, Landers

Orchids in the desert? Yes, at Gubler's Orchids in Landers, north of the Morongo Basin on Hwy. 247 off 29 Palms Highway. The annual "Orchid Festival" is held there in early October each year, an event filled with family fun, food, music, classes and tours. Gubler's Orchids has over 155,000 sq.ft. of greenhouses in production, shipping orchids throughout the U.S. and Canada, and has developed a reputation as one of the top quality orchid growers in the world.
