Death Valley is the extreme-hottest, driest, lowest spot in North America-and at the limit of suggestions for a days journey from Twentynine Palms. There are several road choices for entering the park from the south and, as with the Mojave National Preserve, the U.S.G.S. has provided a virtual geological field trip with a map to help with orientation and which includes several stops in the southern end of the Park. The Geology of Death Valley National Park also offers short chapters on a number of useful topics such as rocks and minerals and plate tectonics.

Saratoga Springs, one of the rare wetlands in the desert, is reached from the Harry Wade exit route off Hwy 127. Harry Wade Road is graded and a high clearance vehicle, but not necessarily 4 wheel-drive, is recommended. A variety of birds and other wildlife are attracted to this wetland so remember to take binoculars.
