Death Valley National Park

To reach Death Valley National Park from Twentynine Palms, the most scenic route is through the Mojave National Preserve and State Highway 127 north from Baker.

Death Valley is the extreme--hottest, driest, lowest spot in North America--and at the limit of suggestions for a day's journey from Twentynine Palms. Make sure to include a visit to Scotty's Castle while you are in Death Valley. There are several road choices for entering the park from the south and, as with the Mojave National Preserve, the U.S.G.S. has provided a Virtual Geology Field Trip of Death Valley National Park with facts, maps and side trips.

Note: Saratoga Springs, one of the rare wetlands in the desert, is reached from the Harry Wade exit route off Hwy 127. Harry Wade Road is graded and a high clearance vehicle, but not necessarily 4-wheel-drive, is recommended. A variety of birds and other wildlife are attracted to this wetland, so remember to take binoculars.
